How to Score 100+ on the TOEFL iBT
Direct answer: a 100+ target needs a score plan tied to the requirement of the program you are applying to, a current official baseline, and repeatable improvement in the section that is holding your total back. Do not assume that a 100+ target means a particular section score; schools can set their own overall and section requirements.
ETS updated the TOEFL iBT on January 21, 2026. Score reports now use a 1–6 overall and section scale, and ETS provides a comparable 0–120 score during the two-year transition. Check the official ETS score explanation and your program’s admissions page before building a target.
What has changed in the current TOEFL iBT?
ETS describes the updated test as adaptive and reports approximate base times of 30 minutes for Reading, 29 for Listening, 23 for Writing, and 8 for Speaking; item counts and time can vary as the test adapts. The task families have changed, so avoid relying on pre-2026 templates that assume the older section design. Read ETS’s current content and structure page before choosing practice materials.
Build the baseline before choosing a section
Use an official practice experience under realistic conditions. Record more than the total: note which task types felt uncertain, where time ran out, and whether a miss came from comprehension, language control, note-taking, or response organization. A low result in one area does not automatically mean that section is the highest-return target; the error pattern does.
| If the pattern is… | Start with… | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Reading answers lack textual support | Evidence and vocabulary-in-context review | Line or phrase that proves each answer |
| Listening notes are unusable | Main idea, transition, and example notes | What each note represented |
| Speaking responses lose structure | Short timed response outlines | Claim, support, and missing detail |
| Writing responses wander | Task purpose and paragraph-level support | How each sentence serves the response |
Use focused practice blocks
Spend several sessions on one observable problem, then retest it in a mixed set. For Reading, cite the words that support the answer. For Listening, use brief labels for the main claim, shift, and example instead of attempting a transcript. For Speaking, practise clear, complete responses within the task’s time limit. For Writing, make the relationship among ideas explicit before polishing grammar.
Make the target honest
A 100+ comparable score is a demanding goal, and no guide can guarantee it. Treat the admissions requirement as the decision rule: if a school needs separate minimums, those minimums matter as much as the overall score. If your practice results do not move after a focused block, change the method or seek feedback rather than simply adding more random tests.
