GAMSAT Guide 2026: Why Section III Is Double-Weighted, Structure, Fees, Quiz, and AI Tutor
GAMSAT is unusual among admissions tests in that its three sections do not count equally. Biological and Physical Sciences carries twice the weight of the other two in the overall score, which means an hour spent on Section III is worth two hours spent anywhere else. Most candidates discover this after building a study plan that divides time evenly. This page sets out the scoring formula, the structure of each section, what the test costs in each country it runs in, and which SimpuTech resources to use next.
GAMSAT has three sections: Written Communication (2 essay responses), Humanities and Social Sciences (62 multiple-choice questions), and Biological and Physical Sciences (75 multiple-choice questions). The overall score is a weighted average — (1 × Humanities and Social Sciences + 1 × Written Communication + 2 × Biological and Physical Sciences) ÷ 4 — so Section III is worth half the total on its own. Scores are reported 0 to 100, which are not percentage marks.

How we verified this page
Section composition, delivery format, and fees come from the official GAMSAT site run by ACER. The scoring formula and 0–100 scale come from the GAMSAT results and information booklet material. Timing figures are quoted only where ACER states them; ACER notes that start and finish times cannot be guaranteed, so per-section limits derived from sample timetables are deliberately not asserted here. Wage data comes from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Where the GAMSAT track leads
GAMSAT is a graduate medical school admissions test, so the benchmark below reflects the profession it leads into. Note that BLS figures are U.S. data while GAMSAT is used in Australia, Ireland, and the UK.
| Role / benchmark | Pay | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Physicians and surgeons (U.S. benchmark) | Equal to or greater than $239,200 median annual wage | 2024 U.S. figure, included as a directional benchmark only — GAMSAT is used in Australia, Ireland, and the UK BLS Physicians and Surgeons |

Frequently asked questions
Are all three GAMSAT sections worth the same?
No. The overall score is (1 × Humanities and Social Sciences + 1 × Written Communication + 2 × Biological and Physical Sciences) ÷ 4, so Section III alone accounts for half the overall score.
What does GAMSAT cost?
AUD$568 including GST in Australia, €378 in Ireland, and £296 in the UK.
Is a GAMSAT score of 60 a 60%?
No. Scores are reported on a 0 to 100 scale that ACER states explicitly are not percentage marks. They are scaled scores designed to rank a highly competitive cohort.
How long is the test?
4 hours and 10 minutes of testing time, though you should expect to be at the test centre for approximately 6 hours. Written Communication is offered separately by remote proctoring at a time you select when booking.
